Audi R25: For LA Design Challenge, but is it just an exercise?

Audi R25
Here’s the Audi R25, Audi’s entry for the Design Challenge during the LA Motor Show. But is it really just a design exercise?

The R25 is designed to utilize and excel in this new racing environment, with features such as:

1. The new Dynamic Space Frame, allowing much greater degree of flexibility, integration of circuits and rigidity
2. Algae bio fuel for endurance and electric motor capability through Wireless power transfer technology
3. Audi Design: Staying true to the “Form is Function” philosophy, there is not an ounce of needless element in the R25, which incorporates advanced technique and efficient form management into one. The car also uses: active micro-control surfaces which optimize airflow during the race; Man Machine Interface, which inputs all vehicle data output into the driver’s helmet visor; all-around vehicle dynamic sensors and integrated on-board HD cameras with real-time data links to allow for spectator interaction, allowing fans to virtually “sit” and experience the race in any racecar through monitors and virtual reality booths.

Audi A1: Interior options will include wasabi green

Here’s another teaser for the Audi A1, this time highlighting the possible interior colors including wasabi green.

“A completely new car is always an exciting challenge for designers. Naturally, we looked for innovative solutions when it came to materials and colors as well,” said Jana Bonkova, a color and trim designer at Audi.

Wasabi is a Japanese type of horseradish. It’s a hot spice with a distinctive, green color. “We use wasabi paste for meals to improve the flavor – but only in small amounts,” Bonkova said. “It’s the same with the A1. Wasabi Green is used selectively to create accents, such as in details like seams. We want to use this color to appeal to people who simply want something new and fresh.”

VW Jetta TDI: Review

VW Jetta TDI
Another nice review of the VW Jetta TDI.

The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI has no direct competition.

This diesel car burns up oily fuel a drop at a time, making the Jetta one of the best and most efficient vehicles available in America.

Yes, I like diesels. And if you want an affordable vehicle that can carry five people from Detroit to Atlanta on a single tank, you should too.

Now I’ve heard lots of arguments against diesels: there’s the “premium” consumers have to pay for a diesel engine; the smoky exhaust and pollution. And then there are the dirty pumps, the fuel costs more, it smells awful and blah blah blah.

Look folks, here’s a car that can get real world mileage in the 40s. It’s a durable engine (which needs its oil changed every 10,000 miles). It’s a spacious car. It looks nice and this car is still cheaper per mile than most vehicles on the road today. And when did gas start smelling good to anyone but huffers too cheap to buy spray paint?

Porsche hatchback: A rendered rumor

Porsche hatchback
Have a look at this rendered rumor of a Porsche Hatchback. Please no, we say!
The car is said to be based on the new VW Golf by the way.

One of the speculations is a sports hatch based on Volkswagen Golf that would rival BMW 1-Series, Audi S3 and future Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA.

Another reason Porsche needs smaller more efficient vehicles is to meet stricter fuel efficiency and emissions rules.

DSG vs. CVT

DSG
AutoWeek has an interesting discussion up about the advantages and disadvantages of DSG transmission vs. ordinary CVT.

Transmission specialists expect demand for continuously variable transmissions to increase in the United States and Japan while dual-clutch transmission technology gains share in Europe.

“The dual-clutch transmission will put the final nail in the coffin for the CVT” in Europe, says Andrew Fulbrook, manager of European powertrain forecasts at CSM Worldwide in London.

Follow the link to read the full article, which is really interesting and a must read if you want to know what makes Audi and VW so special (among some other things of course).
